It’s a fuzzy concept, “edge of the world frontier”. By it I mean,.. every domain of human activity has a frontier,..cutting edge events that are at the forefront of activity in that domain. Collectively, by ‘world frontier’ I mean all domain frontiers taken together.
A few years ago, I decided to use the internet to “try” to find where it was all going. Not only to find the frontier of known areas, but also learn about new things that were just beginning to emerge. It was mind boggling. I learned a lot but felt like Alice in Wonderland walking into a surrealistic telescoping hall that kept extending beyond me. As I walked and learned, the hall kept expanding further out in front of me. The more I saw and learned, the longer the hall became, and the greater the world of unknowns grew too!
At times there were plateaus where I felt,,… Oh I think I’m just about “there”,…at the edge of some frontier. But then invariably something new and unexpected would pop up and surprise me. Just beyond each prospective frontier edge there was something unexpected and new that made the previous world less relevant and sometimes even obsolete.
Up until 100 years ago, a person could ‘possibly’ keep up with world trends. But things have accelerated almost exponentially in each subsequent decade.
Everyone has a new sense of how rapidly the world is changing. The velocity of change in culture, communication, science,…in almost everything, is accelerating. Accelerating so fast that no one person, group, or institution can anticipate it or even track it.
This adds to everyone’s anxiety in every way! Professions and required skill-sets are changing faster than people can reeducate themselves. Current technologies and businesses rapidly become non-competitive, or even obsolete causing massive unpredictable economic disruptions.
So what to do? Profound social, economic, and technological disruption that can’t be adequately anticipated!
This scares many people so much, that they have strong irrational knee jerk reactions, for instance thinking that if they can some how reconstruct or return to a previous time in which they fantasize being ‘better”, they will be better off. But returning to the good old days is always a fantasy – where one cherry pick’s the good memories, and falsely imagines it was all like that.
For me, I try to accept that the world will always change, ..and in unpredictable ways. The takeaway for me is to relax, keep my eyes open, accept the uncertain and unpredictable manner in which life always evolves and enjoy the spectacular ride – because it’s always wilder than you think it’s going to be!!!
